Twilight of the Howling Dead by Martin Ross

Like somewhat demented wage-enslaved elves, we at VS have been working our gnarled fingers to the nubs to get Season 17 on the sled and ready to go. Season 17 -- who’da thought?

It’s only appropriate we open the new season at that time of giving and new beginnings. The gifts we bear to you, the loyal Xphiles, actually are our own presents -- the opportunity to share new stories, new adventures of our favorite paranormal pair is a blessing, a delight as bright as a shiny bowed parcel under the tree. And each season is a new beginning, a rebirth and rejuvenation of our collective imaginations and spirit and the revelation that there are still many, many tales to tell.

But in the tradition of the Ross family holidays, let’s start by opening the small packages first. Little bundles of macabre mystery; dark explorations into the corners neither Christmas lights nor New Year’s joy can penetrate; humorous and sometimes horrific stocking stuffers that lurk at the bottom of the toe.

Christmas, after all, is a time when we believe in bioluminescent reindeer that can guide supernatural beings on a time-defying global journey, in cheerful golem crafted of snow that sing and dance with claymated fervor, in mean green demons who can discover their inner Santa through the kindness of little girl Whos. If Linus can reanimate a sad little Christmas tree and Will Ferrell can make an entire city believe in Kris Kringle, then surely there’s room for zombies and ghouls and vampires and werewolves after the turkey and figgy pudding.

And New Year’s? Please -- you think Dick Clark’s eternal youth is the result of any natural biological process?

So settle back and enjoy a cup of Christmas scare -- er, cheer. Just remember to drink -- and read -- responsibly.
